Moment Of The Year - Charismatic - Chris Antley - 1999 Belmont

The saga of Charismatic seemed to be ending in grief when he crossed the finish line at Belmont Park in third place and in distress. Seconds earlier, just past the wire, jockey Chris Antley noticed that something was dreadfully wrong. He managed to pull Charismatic to a stop, jumped off the horse, falling as he hit the ground. He scrambled to his feet, still holding the horse's reins. Reaching down, he picked up the colt's left front leg so the horse could not put weight on it.

Veterinarians throughout the country agree that Antley's selfless and heroic action saved the colt from injuring himself more severely, even fatally. The NTRA, as well as fans throughout the country, have called this the "Moment of the Year."

Although he was retired and did not race again, Charismatic received the Eclipse Awards as both horse of the year and outstanding three year old colt. Charismatic now stands at stud.
