Horse Breed Descriptions
Danish Warmblood
The Danish Warmblood is the modern sporthorse breed of Denmark. Initially established in the mid-20th century, the breed was developed by crossing native Danish mares with elite stallions from established European bloodlines.

The Dansk Varmblod registry was established in mid-20th century. The registry oversees the registration of Danish warmblood foals and approves stallions for breeding. As with most warmblood studbooks, only stallions who meet certain standards are permitted to breed. Foals with approved pedigrees may receive a brand depicting a crown over a wave.

While still a young breed, Danish warmbloods are currently represented at international competitions in both dressage and show jumping. The Danish Warmblood is still an uncommon breed in the United States, however in 2001 a North American Danish Warmblood Association was formed to promote the breed in the U.S.

Deliboz
The Deliboz is an oriental saddle horse breed in Azerbaijan and was formed in Qazakh, Agstafa and Tovuz regions of Azerbaijan. Some earlier publications described it as the "Kazakh" horse of Azerbaijan or as the Azerbaijan horse. Deliboz horses differ from others by a clean, short head with a broad forehead and narrow nose, a compact heavy neck, a ribbed massive body with a good top line and an even, long back and loin. Legs are clean and well proportioned and the cannon bone girth is larger than that of other horses. Deliboz is characterized by unstable temperament and predominantly rack (or pace) gait. A typical feature is a peculiar lengthwise fold on the tongue giving the impression of a forked tongue. Average withers height is 152 cm, chest girth 172 cm and cannon bone girth 19.4 They are related to the Karabakh breed and are excellent riding and racing horses. Dole Trotter or Dole Gudbrandsdal
The Dole Gudbrandsdal has ancient foundations despite the National Dolehorse Association having been established in 1967. They originated in the Gudbrandsdal Valley of Norway, and probably descended from Dutch and Friesland horses, most notably the Friesian. Having similarities to the British Fell Pony and Dales Pony, it is likely the three breeds originated from the same stock.

There are two types of Dole horse: the heavier Dole Gudbrandsdal and the lighter Dole Trotter. The two breeds are commonly interbred today.

The Dole Gudbrandsdal owes much of it current characteristics to the stallion Brimen. They were originally used for pack or agricultural work until the age of mechanization, at which time numbers declined. In 1967, their state association and state breeding center was established, and their numbers began to increase.

Both the Dole Gudbrandsdal and the Dole Trotter must undergo tests and grading. The draft-type is judged on pulling power and its trot. Its lower legs are x-rayed, and if weaknesses show up the animal may not be used for breeding. The Trotters must have performed well on the racetrack to be approved for breeding.

The Trotting strain developed by experimentation with different crosses. One of the more successful crosses used the stallion Odin, described as both a Norfolk Trotter and a Thoroughbred. Odin's blood produced a lighter horse with a better trot stride, and maintained the power in the hindquarters. The stallion is present in all the pedigrees of modern Doles.

Other stallions that influenced the trotting type were:

  • Balder (4): a grandson of Odin
  • Mazarin, Toftebrun and Dovre: an Arabian stallion registered as being the foundation sire of the Dole Trotter

Finnish Horse
The Finnhorse or Finnish Horse (Finnish : suomenhevonen , pet name: suokki ) belongs to general horse breeds, having both warmblood and heavier draft blood influence and characteristics. The breed is also called the Finnish Universal in English, because it is said to fulfill all needs for horses in Finland, from agricultural work to speedy harness races to riding. Finnhorse is the only native horse breed in Finland. The Finnhorse is among the fastest and most versatile coldbloods in the world.
Fleuve
A light horse breed found in the Senegal area of western Africa. It was formed by crossing Barb horses with the local pony breed, and is the origin of the Fouta.

Fjord horse also called Norwegian Fjord Horse
The Fjord horse (known in Norway as a fjording ) is a rather short but very strong breed of horse from the mountainous regions of western Norway. It ranges from 137 to 147  centimetres (approximately 13.2 to 14.2  hands) in height and weighs from 400 to 550  kilograms (about 882 to 1210  lb ), which classifies it as a pony according to international rules (though it is always called a horse in Norway). This breed is one of the world's oldest and purest breeds. It is believed that the ancestors of the Fjord horse migrated to Norway and were domesticated over 4,000 years ago. [citation needed] Archeological excavations at Viking burial sites indicate the Fjord horse has been selectively bred for 2,000 years. [citation needed]

It has a strong neck, good feet, and a compact, muscular body. Despite its small size, it is fully capable of carrying an adult human and pulling heavy loads. It is always dun in color, brown dun being the most common. The Fjord also comes in three other varieties of Dun (color); grey, red, white and the extremely rare yellow. It has small brown marks over the eyes and on the checks and thighs. The ears bear dark outlines and tips. There is some "feathering" on the legs, and occasionally zebra-like dark horizontal stripes. The coat is thin and shiny in summer, but longer and furry in winter. The mane is long, thick, and heavy, but is usually clipped to between five to ten centimeters (two to four inches) so that it stands up, making grooming easier and accentuating the horse's strong neck and full-length dorsal stripe. In few other breeds does the dorsal stripe extend all the way from poll to tail. Fjords have their own unique conformation.

The fjord horse and its ancestors have been used for hundreds of years as farm animals in western Norway. The horse is strong enough for heavy work, such as plowing the fields or pulling timber, yet light and fast enough to be a good riding and driving horse. Today, the fjord horse is a favourite at Norwegian riding and therapeutic schools, as its generally mild temperament and small size make it suitable for children and disabled individuals. It has also been used as a sport horse. Its ability to handle difficult terrain has led to achievement in show jumping and dressage where they have reached the highest levels. They are considered very good driving horses, and are commonly used in everything from competitions to tourist transport in Norway. Fjord horses were used in mountainous terrain during WWII, and in a tribute to their versitality, also served as food during the food shortages in the Netherlands in 1944-1945.
Florida Cracker Horse
Historically, Cracker horses were an essential part of the cattle industry in Florida, which began almost 500 years ago and flourishes today. Florida cowboys were nicknamed "crackers" because of the sound made by their whips cracking in the air. This name was also given to the small, agile Spanish horses that were essential for working Spanish cattle. Over the years, Cracker Horses have been known by a variety of names: Chicksaw Pony, Seminole Pony, March Tackie, Praire Pony, Florida Horse, Florida Cow Pony, Grass Gut and others.
Fouta or Foutanké
A Fouta is a breed of light horse from Senegal in West Africa. It is a composite of the Fleuve and M'Bayar breeds.
Freiberger
The Freiberger is a draft horse from Switzerland. It is the last representative of the light cold blood horse in Europe. Each year at the Marché Concours in Saignelégier, on the second weekend in August, Freiberger demonstrate how versatile they are in a variety of shows and competitions. Due to its character, willingness, and versatility, suitable for both driving and riding, it is a popular mount. They are also known as the Franches-Montagnes.

Friesian Horse
The Friesian (also Frisian ) horse is a breed of horse from Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. Although the breed's conformation resembles that of a light draft horse, Friesians are graceful and nimble for their size. During the Middle Ages, the ancestors of Friesian horses were in great demand as war horses throughout continental Europe. Through the Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages, their size enabled them to carry a knight in armor. In the Late Middle Ages, heavier, draft type animals were needed. Though the breed nearly became extinct on more than one occasion, the modern day Friesian horse is growing in numbers and popularity, used both in harness and under saddle. Most recently, the breed is being introduced to the field of dressage. More Information
