Horse Breed Descriptions
Galiceno or Galiceño
The Galiceno is a horse breed from Mexico, although not technically a horse in size. Despite that they never grow above 14hh ( hands high), they are still always considered horses, not ponies.
Gelderland (Horse)
The Gelderland , or Gelderlander, is a warmblood breed of horse that was developed in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.
Groningen Horse
The breed association 'Het Groninger Paard' (The Groningen Horse ) was founded in 1982 and was recognized as an official studbook organisation under the Horse Act by decree of the Netherlands monarch on November 28, 1985. The reason it was founded was that other Dutch breed associations at the time merged into a single association, the Dutch Warmblood Studbook, with the objective to breed horses for sport. The Groningen horse, a specific North Netherlands type of horse, would have lost its identity in that merger.

This breed had been developed for working the heavy clay soil. The Groningen horse is a massive and powerful horse for farm work, but is also used as an imposing coach horse as well. The Groningen Association opened a special studbook for this breed in 1982 with the objective to preserve the breed and its distinct character.

As a result of its breeding policy designed in 1982, the Groningen horse survived as a breed and the number of horses has steadily grown. Under the articles of association, this breeding objective is described as follows: to preserve and breed the Groningen: "a heavy warmblood horse with a powerful musculature, an appealing head, a strong and well-carried neck, good withers, not too steep in the shoulders; a wide and deep rump, full, round rib case, solid bones, short and strong cannon bones and wide, hard feet. Its walk is roomy, the trot brisk and groping. This breed has a calm temperament. The primary colours are black, bay or brown."

The Groningen horse stands between 15.3 and 16.1 hands. The association presently has more than 400 members. The studbook and breeding register together list just over 300 horses. At present about 20 stallions are approved for breeding the Groningen. Every year in August there is a National Groningen Show in which the horses that qualified at Regional Selections are presented in hand in various categories for final selection.

Gypsy Vanner Horse
The Gypsy Vanner is a breed of horse with its origin among the Irish Travellers, or Gypsies, of the British Isles. In the United Kingdom, it is usual to refer to them as "traditional coloured cobs", or "piebald/skewbald cobs". These horses are also called a Gypsy Cob (USA ), Irish Tinker Horse, (in Germany and Netherlands), Irish Cob, Piebald (in Ireland), or Gypsy Vanner (USA). Bred for strength and docility. The typical horse measures 14.0 - 15. hands.

A proper "Vanner" is a heavy carriage or cart horse heavy enough to pull relatively large loads. The idea of the Gypsy Vanner/Cob being "bred for centuries" is not completely accurate. For as long as Gypsies have been around, they have bred whatever type of horse that best suits their needs. The availability of horses may have contributed to this, as well as breeding different horses to achieve desired results. Thus, the planned breeding of "Vanners" is a relatively new concept.

Because term "Tinker" is considered a slur by travellers, the term "Tinker Horse" is not generally used by English-speakers to describe the horse.

Hackney (Horse)
The Hackney Horse is a recognized breed of horse that was developed in Great Britain. A stud book has been maintained for this breed since 1883 by the Hackney Horse Society, which has its headquarters in Norwich, England. In recent decades, the breeding of the Hackney has been directed toward producing horses that are ideal for carriage driving. They are known for their great stamina, trotting at high speed for extended periods of time. In addition to inherent soundness and endurance, the Hackney Horse has proven to be a breed with an easy, rhythmic canter, and a free, generous walk.
Haflinger (Horse)
The history of the Haflinger horse can be traced to medieval times when writings told of an Oriental race of horse found in the Southern Tyrolean Mountains which were once part of Austria, but now belong to Northern Italy. Many of the villages and farms in the Tyrol were accessible only by narrow paths requiring agile and sure-footed horses for transportation and packing. Artwork from the region from the early 1800s depicts a small noble chestnut horse with packs and riders traversing steep mountain trails. More Information
Hanoverian (Horse)
A Hanoverian is a warmblooded horse originating in Germany, which is often seen in the Olympic Games and other difficult English style competitions, and have won gold medals in all three equestrian Olympic competitions. It is one of the oldest, most numerous, and most successful of the warmbloods. Originally a carriage horse, infusions of Thoroughbred blood lightened it to make it more agile and useful for competition. The Hanoverian is known for its wonderful temperament, athleticism, beauty, and grace.
Heck Horse
The Heck horse is a breed of horse that resembles the extinct tarpan. This breed was created by the German zoologists Lutz Heck and Heinz Heck in their attempt to recreate the tarpan.
Hispano (Horse)
The Hispano , also known as the Spanish Anglo-Arab, origionated in Spain as a result of a cross between mares of Arab and Andalusian heritage and English Thoroughbred stallions. The breed is also for this reason referred to as trés sangres , meaning 'three blood' - the three blood lines upon which the breed is founded. They stand between 14.3 and 16 hands high, and are usually bay, grey or chestnut but can also be black.
Holsteiner , also called Holstein
The Holstein is a breed of horse originating in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany. It is thought to be the oldest of warmblood breeds, tracing back to the 13th century. There are relatively few Holsteins, however, they still excel in a variety of disciplines.
Hungarian Warmblood
The Hungarian Warmblood or Hungarian Sport horse as it is also known was developed at the Mezohegyes State Stud in Hungary. Through selective crossing of native Hungarian breeds, a "warmblood sport horse" was established. It is now used mostly as a competition horse and including disciplines like dressage, show jumping, cross-country and combined driving.

Iberian Horse , encompassing the Andalusian, Alter Real, Lusitano and crosses
The Iberian horse is a title given to a number of horse breeds native to the Iberian peninsula . At present, 17 horse breeds are recognized by FAO (2005) as characteristics of the Iberian Peninsula. Three are Portuguese, the Lusitano, Sorraia and Garrano, and the remaining 14 are Spanish. These include the Asturcón, Burguete, Caballo de Monte del País Vasco, Pura Raza Gallega, Cavall Mallorquí, Pura Raza Española (Andalusian horse), Hispano-Arabe, Hispano-Bretón, Jaca Navarra, Losina, Mallorquina, Menorquina, Monchina and Pottoka. [1]

One of the oldest types of horses, domestication of horses in the Iberian peninsula dates back as far as 3000 BC when Greek invaders feared the Iberian cavalry. Modern Iberian breeds tend to be of a Baroque horse type that resemble their most famous member, the Andalusian horse , in conformation. There are also ponies, including the Sorraia as well as the Garrano.

Icelandic Horse
The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse that has lived in Iceland since the mid- 800s, having been brought to the island by Viking settlers. The Icelandic Horse is a man-made breed as it is a mixture of breeds and cross-breeds which were taken from Scandinavian and European countries to Iceland during the original and subsequent settlements. Because they are by-and-large pony -sized, they are commonly called "Icelandic ponies" in some countries. [1] This name is normally considered derogatory and inappropriate within Iceland.

Indian Half-Bred
The Indian Hald-Bred was developed in India primarily at the army studs to produce suitable cavalry horses. They are descended from a cross between the native Kathiawari, oriental stock, the Australian Waler and a subtantial amount of English Thoroughbred. Around the beginning of the 20th century, large numbers of Walers were imported to India for use within the Indian Cavalry and remained the principal method of transport until the start of mechanisation. The army had used mostly Arab, and Arab part-bred stock for their requirements, but had then started to import the larger and more suitable Australian Waler as replacements. The Half-Bred is now produced all over India especially at the army remount depot at Saharanpur and army stud at Babugarth. As well as in the army, the Indian Half-Bred is also widely used by the police force in the towns and especially in the rural areas. The Half-Bred can be any colour and stand between 15 and 16 hands high.

Iomud
The Iomumd is an ancient breed, closely related to the Akhal-Teke, and descendant from the old Turkmmenian horses. The Iomud developed in Southern Tokmenia, and has over the centuries beem influenced by infusions of Arab, Kazakh, Mongolian, Turkmene, and more recently Akhal-Teke blood.

The heads often have a slightly Roman profile and the horses have large, kind eyes. Standing around 15 hands high, the Iomud come mostly in grey, but they can be chestnut or black.

Irish Draught , also spelled Irish Draft
The Irish Draught horse , sometimes spelled Irish Draft , is the national breed of Ireland which developed primarily for farm use. Today, they are especially popular for crossing with Thoroughbreds, producing the popular Irish Sport Horses (or Irish Horses) that excel at the highest levels of eventing and show jumping.

Irish Horse or Irish Sport Horse
The Irish Sport Horse (US: Irish Draught Sports Horse), also known as the Irish Hunter, is mainly the result of a cross between the Irish Draught and the Thoroughbred. It has not yet been given recognition as a separate breed, although it is commonly bred from parents who are also Irish Sport Horses, in addition to being bred from the definitive parent breeds.

The Irish Sport Horse is traditionally used for all purposes, from transportation, to riding, and working the land. However, it is becoming increasingly popular as a competition riding horse. Its natural athletic ability and fantastic jumping talents means that it excels in the show jumping arena, as well as competing at the highest levels of eventing. The horse is globally renowned for being one of the best fox hunting mounts in the world, and the Irish Sport Horse studbook regularly tops the rankings for eventing [1].

Ireland produces a great number of Irish Sport Horses each year, many of them selling for great amounts in the United States and Europe.
