Horse Breed Descriptions
Vlaamperd
The Vlaamperd horse breed is nearly extinct. Developed as a draft and riding animal in South Africa, the breed was formed by Friesian blood infused with Thoroughbred, Hackney (horse) and Cape Harness horse blood.

Developed in the Western Cape, Vlaamperde originated from a 19th century horse, the "Hantam Horse', which came into being though the use of English Thoroughbred and Arabian stallions on local Cape mares. At the beginning of this century several Friesian stallions were imported to South Africa and used on the Hantam mares. East-Friesian, Oldenburg and Cleveland Bay stallions were also used and some of the distinctive characteristics of these breeds are still found in the modern SA Vlaamperd. At the beginning of this century, the Dutch government prohibited the exportation of Friesian horses from the Netherlands and to side-step this law, Friesian horses were shipped from the Belgian port of Antwerp in Flanders. As a result of this, Friesian horses became known as 'Vlaamse perde' in South Africa and the name was later adopted by the Vlaamperd Breed Society. The Vlaamperd is used for riding but with its good nature, graceful conduct and stylish high stepping action, excels as a carriage driving horse.

Waler Horse , also known as Waler or Australian Waler
The Waler is an Australian working horse breed that originated from the horse stock that was brought to the Australian colonies in the 1800s . The name comes from the fact that they were first bred in New South Wales and so were originally known as New South Walers . The waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds (such as the Thoroughbred, Clydesdale, Percheron and Arab) and the Timor Pony . It was originally considered only a "type" of horse, and not a distinct breed.
Walkaloosa
Walkaloosa comes from Paso Fino / Spanish bloodlines and is a gaited, Appaloosa -patterned horse.
Warmblood, also see "Types of horses" below
Warmbloods are a group of sport horse breeds and the term simply distinguishes this type of horse from the "cold bloods" (draft horses) and the "hot bloods" (Thoroughbreds and Arabians). Sport horse refers to the intended use of the breed -- as a competitive and recreational horse for the major international equestrian disciplines of dressage, show jumping, eventing and combined driving. More Information

The Wielkopolski is a breed of horse that was originated in Central and Western Poland in 1964, so it is still relatively young. It was developed by crossing two now extinct Polish breeds, the Pozan (bred at the Posadowo, Racot and Gogolewo studs) and the Masuren (bred at the Liski stud), so it is also referred to as the Mazursko-Poznanski. These two breeds formed a base, on which Thoroughbred , Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian blood was further added.

Color "breeds" Main article: Color breed

There are some registries that accept horses (and sometimes ponies and mules) of almost any breed or type for registration. Color is either the only criterion for registration or the primary criterion. These are called " color breeds," because unlike "true" horse breeds, there are few other physical requirements, nor is the stud book limited in any fashion. As a general rule, the color also does not always breed on (in some cases due to genetic impossibility), and offspring without the stated color are usually not eligible for recording with the color breed registry. The best-known color breed registries are for the following colors:
  • Buckskin (horse)
  • Palomino
  • Pinto horse
There are breeds that have color that usually breeds "true" as well as distinctive physical characteristics and a limited stud book. These horses are true breeds that have a preferred color, not color breeds, and include the Friesian horse, the Appaloosa and the American Paint Horse.

Terms used to describe types, not breeds

A "type" of horse is not a breed, per se, but is simply a term used to describe a group of breeds that are similar in appearance (phenotype) or use. A type usually has no breed registry, though horses of a given type may be registered as one of several different recognized breeds.

  • AQPS ("Autre Que Pur-Sang")
  • Baroque horse, includes heavily muscled, powerful, yet agile Classical Dressage breeds such as the Lipizzaner, Friesian, Andalusian and others.
  • Cob (horse)
  • Draft horse or Draught horse
  • Hack
  • Sport horse
  • Warmblood, which includes Dutch Warmblood, Hanoverian (horse), Swedish Warmblood, Westphalian (horse), etc.
