Pony Breed Descriptions
Pony breeds Main article: Pony

Ponies are usually classified as animals that mature at less that 14.2 hands. However, some pony breeds may occasionally have individuals who mature over 14.2 but retain all other breed characteristics. There are also some breeds that now frequently mature over 14.2 hands due to modern nutrition and management, yet retain the historic classification "pony." For the purposes of this list, if a breed registry classifies the breed as a "pony," it is listed here as such, even if some individuals have horse characteristics.

(Please note: Because of this designation by the preference of a given breed registry, most miniature horse breeds are listed as "horses," not ponies)

Manipuri Pony
The Manipuri Pony is thought to have been derived from ancient stock, as a cross between the Mongolian Wild Horse and the Arabian. The original purpose of the ponies was as mounts for the Manipur cavalry, which was respected and feared throughout upper Burma during the 17th century. The breed was used in the army throughout World War II , as transport animals to take the British 14th Army into Burma in 1945.

The animals are very agile, tough, and athletic: traits that led to the breed becoming the original polo ponies. The King of Manipur introduced the game in the 7th century, using the swift state-bred ponies. The British became aware of the game in the 19th century, and eventually took it to Europe and America, where it thrived. However, the Manipuri lost popularity as the height limit for polo ponies was raised over the years, and abolished in 1919, at which time most players chose larger mounts.

Today, the ponies are used as polo mounts, for racing, and in the military, where their speed, stamina, and intelligence are well-respected.

The Manipuri should have a straight profile, alert ears, and intelligent eyes. The muzzle is broad, the neck muscular and well-shaped, with a good amount of mane. The animal is broad through the chest, with well-sprung ribs, and a compact body. The shoulder is sloping, giving the Manipuri a fast, long stride with little action. The hindquarters are muscular and the croup slightly sloping. The legs have strong knees and hocks, dense bone, and tough feet. The ponies rarely stand higher than 13 hh, and may be bay, chestnut, gray, or brown, and occasionally pinto in color.

New Forest Pony
The New Forest Pony is one of the recognised nine Mountain and Moorland or Native pony breeds of the British Isles, valued for its hardiness, strength and sureness of foot. Many of them can be seen running loose on the New Forest in southern England; although the ponies may appear wild (which they are to some extent), they are privately owned by Commoners of the New Forest. The ponies are looked after by their owners and the Agisters (employees of the Verderers of the New Forest). The Verderers are a modern statutory body with ancient roots, that shares the management of the forest with the Forestry Commission.
Newfoundland Pony
The Newfoundland pony is a breed of pony originating in Newfoundland formerly used as a beast of burden. It was considered the all purpose pony, in large part because it has several desirable characteristics: stamina, strength, intelligence, courage, obedience, willingness, and common sense. Newfoundland ponies are generally hard workers and easy keepers.
Nigerian Pony
The Nigerian Pony origionates in Nigeria and is believed to be related to the Barb. Barbs, brought to Nigeria by nomadic peoples, were cross-bred with the local ponies, resulting in the Nigerian. The Nigerian may have similar ancestors to the little known Poney Mousseye of Cameroon.

Noma Pony
The Noma is a pony breed from Noma County, Japan. They originated in the 17th century from Mongolian stock, and are the smallest native ponies from that country, standing only up to 10.1 hh. The ponies are used for draft and riding.

As of December, 1988, there were only 27 pure Noma ponies. The breed is currently being preserved as local cultural heritage. [citation needed]

Northlands Pony
The Northlands Pony is an extremely old breed that origionates in Norway. It is generally considered to be a descendant of the Asiatic Wild Horse and the Tarpan, from which the Baltic pony, or Konik and the Celtic ponies, the Icelandic horse, Shetland and Exmoor pony, also derived. The Northlands, therefore, have much in common with the breeds mentioned above and comparisons between them are worth making. They are mainly bay or brown and stand between 12 and 14 hands high.
Ob Pony
The rare Ob pony is from western Siberia in Russia and is used as a draft pony.
